Book Club Launch

Not everyone identifies with the label of “environmental educator.”

Likewise, not everyone who connects the public to nature, the outdoors, or the environment through their work thinks of themselves as being in the field of environmental education (EE), even though environmental education is what they do.

I can see why this is the case. The phrase “environmental education” stirs up a particular kind of imagery. Think summer camp or K-12 field trips, for example. However, this field is so much more.

Because of this, I am launching a book club for environmental professionals. This book club is not just a book club. It is also a place to discuss articles and other publications worth discussing with peers.

This book club is also not about me as the primary guide. A different person will lead each session. This person will guide the conversation around the book, journal article, etc., of their choosing that is related to some aspect of the EE field or related to some aspect of working as an independent professional.

I will lead the first session on March 4, 2022, at 12 PM (Pacific). This conversation will focus on a paper about traditional EE organizations and non-traditional EE organizations and how they might benefit from knowing about each other.

To join this session, click on the button below.

I will also discuss how you can lead a book club session.

Does this book club have a name?

At the moment, I am calling it BEAM: A Book Club.

Why BEAM?

A beam is a support structure. It is also a ray of light. This club aims to enrich the practices of those strengthening environmental literacy in communities.

This club is for independent environmental professionals, individuals thinking about starting a freelance initiative, and other environmental professionals, regardless of their field or employment status.

Hope to see you there.
