the Next Chapter
Dear Friend,
When I began The Freelance Project, I envisioned having good conversations and insight to have a deep discussion about freelancing in environmental education. This vision materialized in ways I didn’t expect and fell flat in other ways.
To date, we’ve learned about diverse approaches to environmental education from 93 podcast guests. We’ve learned from guest speakers and from each other through virtual events and gatherings.
Today I want to revisit one of the key moments of my journey so far. I have shared this moment before. It was an experience I had at a conference for outdoor educators. Years ago, now, I sat in on a session where educators shared tips and resources to make seasonal work easier to navigate. I don’t remember the tips shared that day. I do remember the impression this dynamic group of educators made on me. I could feel some of them were on their way out to seek other employment. While at that conference, I spoke with someone who had already left the field. The experience of this day has never left me, and neither has the question I walked away with:
What if I could say to people leaving EE, “Hey, have you ever considered applying your experience in another field?”
Throughout this journey, I have become increasingly convinced that greater attention is needed to raise awareness in other sectors about what environmental education professionals can do. Raising this awareness will be my focus for 2026. To make this happen, I am turning Transferable Solutions into an online publication. I am working on it right now and will let you know when it’s ready. As for this website, it will remain as is. The podcast will still live here. The new publication needs its own space.
I can’t thank you enough for the way you’ve brought life to The Freelance Project through your participation and presence at online events and conferences, your feedback, your email messages and coffee chats, your invitations to collaborate, and your permission to let me connect with you almost every week.
Clarity about something comes from doing that something.
Thank you for letting me do my work as a documentarian, podcaster, and teacher.
~ Tania
